Winter in Islamabad brings a familiar problem. The days are short, the evenings are long, heaters and geysers run harder, and gas pressure drops just when you need it most. Many families end up paying more for electricity and gas at the same time.
A standard grid-tied solar system helps during the day, but it does nothing after sunset or during load-shedding. A hybrid solar system with battery storage closes that gap.
What a hybrid system actually does
A hybrid inverter manages three sources at once: your solar panels, your battery and the grid. During the day, solar powers your home first. Any surplus charges the battery instead of being sent to the grid. In the evening, and whenever the grid goes down, the battery takes over, and backup typically switches in within milliseconds, so lights, fans, routers and appliances keep running.
Why storing your own power matters more in 2026
Since February 2026, new rooftop solar users in Pakistan have moved from net metering to net billing, and the rate paid for units exported to the grid has been cut sharply. In simple terms, a unit of solar you use yourself is now worth far more than a unit you sell back. A battery lets you keep your daytime solar and use it in the evening, when you would otherwise be buying expensive grid power.
Where the winter savings come from
- Evening use on solar: the battery covers the evening peak, when lighting, cooking and heating loads are highest.
- Load-shedding without a generator: fewer hours running a petrol or diesel generator.
- Hot water without gas: pair your system with a heat pump water heater and your geyser runs on solar instead of gas (see our heat pump guide).
- Less wasted solar: instead of exporting surplus at a low rate, you store it.
How big should the battery be?
It depends on what you want to run after sunset and for how long. A home that only needs lights, fans, internet and a fridge in the evening needs much less storage than one that wants to run water heating and a few heaters. FOX ESS batteries are modular: the EP6 holds 5.76 kWh, and the EP12 holds 11.52 kWh per unit and can be expanded to 46.08 kWh, so you can start with what you need and add more later.
The best time to install is before the cold sets in
A site survey takes the guesswork out. We look at your past electricity and gas bills, your roof space and shading, your connection type (single or three-phase) and the loads you want backed up, then design a system around them.
